House Building Polish: Laying the Foundations for Housing

Today is all about polish

We have been working on house building for quite a while now. Walls, floors, furniture, your own plot of land: a lot of it is already in place. Today, though, we decided not to start anything new and to really polish what is already there instead. Small things you might not even notice while playing, but they make the difference between a house and a home.

With this we are laying the foundations for everything that will come later around living in Call Me Human.

A house of roots and leaves

Our favourite piece today is the alien house. It grows out of thick roots, wears huge autumn leaves as its roof and glows from its windows in a warm turquoise. It stands on its own little map by the coast, right next to a field where we can grow crops. House building and farming in one place, that is how we imagine it.

Inside there is a bright wooden floor framed by roots. This room kept us busy today, because the walls are slanted and round. A bed should still sit neatly against the wall and not float somewhere in the air. Those are exactly the spots we smoothed out today.

In the middle of furnishing

The most fun part is of course furnishing itself. In furnish mode a bar sorts everything into furniture, decor, wall and floor, and rugs. Click to place something, right click to take it away, turn it with the mouse wheel, and if you do not like it, simply undo it.

Here we are just laying a green rug in front of the bed. The frame already shows where it will land.

What got better today

  • Building freehand: Furniture can now be placed more freely in the room, simply with the mouse wheel, Esc and the bar. And furniture no longer ends up in corners where it does not belong.
  • Light in the house: At night it gets cosy and dark inside, and a floor lamp fills the room with warm light.
  • Windows: The windows now look the way they should, from inside and outside.
  • Floor and rugs: The floor follows the shape of the room, and rugs bring some colour in.
  • Your plot: A small candle flame now flickers on every post of your own plot. In the evening you can see from afar where your home is.

When it gets dark outside

The light made us especially happy today. When night falls it gets dark inside the house, and only the lamp you placed yourself makes the room warm and bright.

And you can see it from outside too. Warm light glows from the windows into the snowy night, and you know right away: someone is home.

Why we take so much time for this

In Call Me Human a house is more than a place to sleep. It is where you come back to after a long day, where you furnish room by room and that grows with you. If something feels off here, you notice it every single day. That is why it is worth being careful right here before we build on top of it.
