At the edge of the world: four coasts for Veyl

Where the map ends

Every world has to end somewhere. We never wanted that to mean walking into an invisible wall or bumping into the edge of a picture. So over the last few days we sat down and planned what the borders of Veyl should look like. The result is four coasts, one for each direction.

The idea is simple: where the map truly ends, you stand at a ledge and look out. You can't go any further, but you can see how big the world beyond really is. Where the land does continue, you can jump down and keep exploring on the level below.

The south: cliffs above the sea

In the south, the red land drops away in tall stone pillars, and a turquoise sea crashes against lonely rock spires far below. Walk all the way here and you're standing right at the edge with nothing but water ahead. For us it's one of the calmest places in the whole world, a spot made for stopping and just taking it in.

West and east: the sea on both sides

In the west, our hero looks out from the cliff over the open sea

To the west and east the land ends in cliffs as well. The path winds between trees and crystals right up to the edge, and then your view opens up across the water. Each side gets its own shape, so the edge of the map never feels like the same picture over and over.

The eastern coast: rock walls, surf and small rocky islands in the sea

The north: a glimpse of what's next

Up north it gets cold. You stand on a snowy lookout and gaze down into a wide green steppe full of mesas, flat-topped trees and a winding river. And that's the best part: what you see down there is already the second stage, the second region of Veyl. So you get to peek at what's waiting for you next before you ever set foot in it.

What's next

These pictures show how the coasts are meant to look, with our hero and the on-screen display you know from the game. It isn't finished yet, we're right in the middle of building it. Next up is motion: waves breaking against the rocks, spray along the cliffs and plenty more, so the edges of the world don't just look pretty but feel alive.

We can't wait to stand at that ledge ourselves for the first time and look out.

See you soon,
