Tidied up, with a solid foundation
What happened today
Today was a tidy-up day. Over the last few weeks we have already made a lot of objects and animations, and at some point there is so much lying around that you lose track. So we sat down today and sorted our collection. That included the creatures: the animations for the Ore Maw, the Ancient Moon Owl, the Slag Colossus and the Crystaltooth Tree Serpent are now going into the library of our Terra Engine, neatly sorted.
Not everything was clean. On some animations the creature's head was cut off, or a piece of the neighboring frame was still showing. We set those aside together. We did not delete anything, in case we can make something of them later.
What we got done
- A library with order: Images and animations get their fixed place in the shared library of the Terra Engine. No more digging through folders.
- Big cleanup: The old test areas from last week are gone. They helped us experiment, but they were only tests.
- A solid foundation: The first area, the crash site, is now our starting point. From here we build area after area by hand until we reach the mine.
- The week's tools are coming together: In one big round we are merging everything that was built separately over the last few days into the Terra Engine. That includes new tool tiers in wood, stone, copper and iron, new enemies like the crystal spider, the spike stalker and the ore scorpion, the villagers, mountain birds, new sounds and a default key layout. It is in progress and we are at the last tests. It is not finished yet.
- First thoughts on combat: We started planning the basic formula for our combat system. So far it exists only on paper, nothing is built yet.
What's next
First we finish the big merge properly, so everything runs together and nothing gets lost along the way. After that we build the next area after the crash site. We will keep planning the combat formula calmly before we build a single line of it.
Thank you for following along.
See you tomorrow,
